Our model this month is my very own Andrew Arthur Duncan, now aged 14 months, who is fascinated by his own reflection in the mirror!
We are also lucky to have Janet share her story, about how she returned to her pre-pregnancy weight within 6 months of giving birth to twins....a great read, thanks for sharing with us Janet!
Getting back into shape after giving birth to twins
Hi, I'm Janet and in December of 2006 I was fortunate to give birth to twins, a boy Alex and a girl Amy. Like Carley I was a gym junkie prior to falling pregnant and had been religiously going 4-5 mornings a week for 2 years, working out with a training partner "Rachael" and using the services of a personal trainer once a week. I also regularly played tennis at the local club. I was in my best shape ever when I fell pregnant, a healthy size 10 and feeling very fit, which I think really helps with getting back into shape after the birth. I continued going to the gym until I was 5 months pregnant and was too big to "workout", (being pregnant with twins I was the size of an 8 month pregnant woman having one baby!) From 5 months onwards I really didn't do much exercise at all, as I was just too big and uncomfortable, I even struggled to walk to the letterbox in the final weeks! I put on 22 kilos with my pregnancy and am only 160cm tall, so I looked huge!
My twins went full term and I was lucky enough to give birth naturally a week before Christmas and both were healthy weights so no need for incubators or special care. When Alex & Amy were 3 weeks old I went for my first walk pushing the buggy - I managed 40 minutes with a couple of hills, but couldn't believe how much of a struggle that was! I then continued to walk 3 times a week, and once my strength returned was walking an hour or more 3-4 days per week around the hills of Titirangi pushing a double buggy. I then also resumed tennis once the twins were 3 months old (playing only once a week), and continued with my regular walking to maintain my sanity! I managed to breast feed for the first 3 months, which I'm not sure if this had any affect on losing weight as I needed to eat so much! However by the time Alex & Amy were 6 months old, I had returned to my pre-pregnancy body weight and it was a wonderful feeling to once again fit my clothes that I hadn't worn for 18 months!
I believe that the key to my success was being fit and healthy when I conceived, keeping fit while pregnant (while not overdoing it) and not binging on food during the pregnancy, so that the weight you put on while pregnancy is all baby related, not extra kilos you need to shed afterwards.
